Andy got his Fil. Mag. (M.Sci.) from Lund university in Sweden, before getting a Docteur ès Sciences (PhD) from the EPFL in Switzerland. He next spent two years as a postdoc at the Shanghai Jiaotong university in China, before arriving at UC Davis in spring 2007. His research has focused on 1) physicochemical properties of ionic liquids, 2) catalysis in ionic liquids and water and 3) synthesis of polyoxometalates and reaction dynamics of polyoxometalates.

We are synthesising new clusters that can be used to increase our knowledge of aqueous reactivity. We are focusing our efforts on the synthesis of niobium-, iron- and uranium-based polyoxometalates, and developing cost-effective methods for ¹⁷O-enrichinging these. In addition, we use ESI-MS to look at the reactivity of this class of compounds, and to study ¹⁸O-exchange to determine oxygen-lability.
