A. Teaching Requirements
1. Serve the equivalent of three academic quarters at one-fourth time as a teaching assistant.
B. Course Requirements
1. Clear any deficiencies identified by placement exams by taking appropriate undergraduate courses and receiving a 3.0 or higher in each.
2. Take a total of 2 or 3 graduate chemistry core courses depending on area of specialization, receiving a grade of 3.0 or higher in each.
3. Take elective courses* from either Chemistry or another approved department to bring the total of courses to six, receiving a grade of 3.0m or higher in each. *CHE 261,263, 264, 288, 290, 293, 295, 299 and 390 cannot be used towards this requirement.
4. Enroll in CHE 290 during each quarter until advancement to candidacy.
5. Be enrolled full time (12 units) every quarter and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
C. Qualifying Examination
1. Clear all decencies and complete all TA and course requirements.
2. Take and pass oral qualifying exam in front of four Chemistry faculty and one faculty from another department.
D. Advancement to Candidacy
1. Petition for advancement to candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy
E. The Doctoral Dissertation
1. Complete and submit dissertation
A. Course Requirements
1. Clear any deficiencies in field of interest identified by placement exams by taking appropriate undergrad courses and receiving 3.0 or higher in each.
2. Take at least 3 graduate level courses* receiving a 3.0 or higher in each. *CHE 261,263, 264, 288, 290, 293, 295, 299 and 390 cannot be used towards this requirement.
3. Enrollment in CHE 290 Seminar, each quarter in residence
4. Complete at least 30 units of upper division and graduate level course work, of which at least 12 units must be graduate level course work.
5. Be fully registered (12 units) every quarter in residence and maintain a 3.0 or higher overall GPA.
B. Thesis
1. Be in residence for a minimum of 3 quarters in full time standing.
2. Complete an acceptable research thesis.
3. The department does NOT offer a coursework only Masters degree.
