Chemistry Club General Meeting: T-shirts, Shows, Videos

Posted by Mohammad on February 7, 2012

The midterms are foregone and there is much to be done. The Chem Club will be having a General Meeting this Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Room 172 of the Chemistry Building at 6:30 PM. We will vote on this year's t-shirt design and have in-person signups for upcoming shows and the video projects so make sure to come. In addition, we will have PIZZA and DRINKS so we can focus on our agenda with full bellies! If anyone has any last minute t-shirt designs, please make sure to send them to me via email by Wednesday afternoon; those of you who have submitted t-shirt designs, please make sure to bring a copy of your file on a flash drive in case the officers' or myself missed your submission.

T-Shirt Design Contest

Posted by Mohammad on January 22, 2012

I wanted you all to know that we will be having our next meeting sometime early to mid-February (to be announced soon) and at that time we will vote and decide on this year's Chem Club shirt. Please visit the Chem Club Facebook page (link below) to check out the designs that have been submitted thus far and also to make sure that your design is up there if you have submitted one. I urge anyone still wanting to submit a design to intend doing so by the first week of February.

Meeting Tomorrow and Chem Videos!

Posted by Mohammad on November 29, 2011

Don't forget that tomorrow, November 30th, we will be having a general meeting/ice cream social from 6:30 to 7:30 PM at Chemistry 176. Come by to learn about our upcoming video project, get a look at current t shirt designs, and meet some new people while enjoying fresh ice cream made on the spot! Also, Dr. Annaliese Franz, one of our club advisors, has offered her class credit for making videos related to chemistry. They are pretty entertaining and education so I advise you all check it out.

Show Signups

Posted by Mohammad on October 11, 2011

Our webmaster Rajiv Battula has facilitated show signups by posting a spreadsheet on the Chem Club website at the link here.

From now on, once any of you send me an email to volunteer, I will ask him to update the spreadsheet so that you all know what commitments you have made and who you will be performing with. Most importantly, you can look up what times are still available and see if you would like to fill the spot.

I urge you all to look around the renovated website. It has many fun-filled pictures and a listing of many of the past events - see what you can be a part of this year and on!

Upcoming Shows, Next Meeting, T-Shirt Designs

Posted by Mohammad on October 10, 2011

Our first meeting of the year was a great success. We had many new members join the club and hope to get everyone involved in some of the upcoming shows. Many have been asking me when the next meeting will be, and the truth is I cannot tell for sure. At Chem Club we tend to schedule meetings about a week or two in advance and send out notices mainly via the listserv. So, if you're on the listserv and have received this message, you will know when and where the next meeting is. If your not on the listserv, email me.

We are participating in three events this month: two tabling events and one demonstrations show. Coming up this Saturday, October 15th is Preview Day and we will be tabling at the ARC Pavilion blowing off little ethanol cannons and giving out subzero crackers to prospective undergrads and avid high school students. We will be tabling from 11:30AM-2:30PM which means there will be two shifts with two volunteers each. I will be there the whole time, possibly along with an advisor, so do not shy away from this first opportunity to get hands-on with some simple demos. Cutting to the chase, I am looking for two volunteers to table from 11: 30 - 1PM and two volunteers to come in at 1PM until 2:30PM.

Next, we will be tabling at the Farmers' Market Fall Festival on Saturday, October 29th. The Farmers' Market is always a fun place to be at on the weekend, yet I hear it's even nicer during the festival. We will be catering mostly to kids and guide them through building licorice/gum drop DNA models, blow up little EtOH cannons, make some slime, have a lot of fun, and meet new people. The Festival is from 9AM to 1PM thus I am looking for 5 volunteers from 8:40 AM to 11AM and another 5 from 11AM to 1 PM; the morning is a little earlier to allow for setup.

We will end the month with a Halloween Show at the Rec Pool Lodge parking lot on October 31st tentatively planned to start at 7 PM. This is the first opportunity of the year to experience a full show, so I hope some of our newcomers will volunteer to get a taste of what Chem Club does better than any other club on campus: make explosions and make people smile!

Also, if you have any inclination towards design or art, take a shot at designing this year's t-shirt and you could win the club's admiration and a free shirt!

If you are interested in volunteering for any of the events listed above, make sure to email me with your name, the show name, and the time you would like to participate.

I will post the details of the next meeting soon. My email address is on the Contact page.

FIRST GENERAL CHEMISTRY CLUB MEETING

Posted by Mohammad on September 29, 2011

I hope your first couple days back in school have passed well. It's a new academic year and time for us to get together, enjoy some pizza, and discuss upcoming shows, t-shirts, and, as always, make some explosions. In addition, the Chem Club will be setting up networking sessions this year so that members may be better connected with professors and local professionals who can provide insight to the opportunities in chemistry as well as provide internship and research opportunities.

The first meeting of the year will be held at the Chemistry Courtyard (side of the Chemistry building that faces the Silo and bike racks) at 6:30 PM this Monday, October 3rd. Make sure to come with an appetite and bring along any friends who have the slightest interest in all things fun in chemistry.

ACS LOCAL SECTION MEETING THIS SATURDAY

Posted by Mohammad on September 15, 2011

This upcoming Saturday, September 17th, the local Sacramento section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is hosting a seminar/networking session at the Bicycle Hall of Fame in Davis. There will also be an awards part of the program that will acknowledge the UCD Chem Club! With that said, this could be a great opportunity to connect with representatives from labs on and off campus (such as nearby companies). As revealed toward the bottom of this email, there is an official networking session in the beginning of the meeting at which time it is very appropriate to ask around about peoples' experiences to get an idea of where a chemistry-related degree can take you after university, as well as to seek opportunities in laboratory/research chemistry. On top of all this, come to enjoy a short talk by Dr. Kauzlarich.

Birch Lane Magic Show Coming Up - Volunteers Needed

Posted by Mohammad on July 29, 2011

For those of you taking finals this week: I wish you the best of luck, and for those of you on vacation: the best of memories.

We will be performing a show in the Chemistry Building courtyard for Birch Lane Elementary school on Monday, August 8. I assume - like last year - it will be a group of about 30 grade school kids who is a fun and appreciative crowd. This is a smaller crowd than usual, so if you want to practice performing without much stage fright, this is the right show for you.

The show will start at 11 and end at 11:30 AM, however performers will meet up at 10:45 AM to carry materials and demos to the courtyard and setup.

If you are interested in volunteering, please send me an email, ucdchemclubpres at gmail dot com

On a side note: the new academic year is not a long ways out and we always want more people to take part in the Chem Club and experience the best club on campus! With that said, I want you all, the Chem Clubbers, to spread the word about Chem Club, take a look at and "like" the UCD Chemistry Club Facebook Page.

COSMOS show - Calling for Volunteers

Posted by Mohammad on July 2, 2011

We will be putting on a show for some knowledge-yearning youngsters from the COSMOS program on Wednesday, July 20 from 1 - 1: 50 PM at 2205 Haring Hall. We will be going all out in this show and doing many demos as well as some different ones in comparison to previous shows. All in all, some volunteers are needed to come out and have some fun with chemistry, and to put on a great show. Send me an email if you are interested in participating in the show!

First Meeting of Fall Quarter 2010

Posted by Tim on August 3, 2007

After much anticipation, the time has come to reassemble the UC Davis Chemistry Club. I hope you are all refreshed and ready to begin another year of eating pizza and blowing stuff up. Our first general meeting will be held in Chem 179 @ 5:30pm Monday October 25th. This year we have two very important new events for our first meeting. The first of which is a voluntary "Trial by Ice". This is a non-mandatory ritual that chem clubbers may participate in to celebrate the induction of members to this years club. We will also be announcing the opening of an exciting new officer position that needs to be filled as soon as possible. If you have any questions, contact Tim at tnewmanusn@gmail.com.
