Saeed Kamali (Post-doc)

After a Ph.D. in material sciences from Uppsala University, Saeed joined the Division for Spintronics at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm as a post doctoral scholar. Later on he returned to Department of Physics in Uppsala, where he taught different courses in Physics and continued his research, before he moved to Japan for research using synchrotron based techniques at largest synchrotron facility in the world, SPring8. Saeed’s main research has been magnetism in nanostructured materials with focus on nanoparticles, thin films and supelattices, and the applications of them in Spintronics. In his research, Saeed has been using different growth, characterization and measurement techniques, such as, sputtering, Electron Beam Evaporation, X-ray technique, XMCD, SQUID magnetometry, MCS (Magnetic Compton Scattering), Mössbauer spectroscopy, Nuclear Resonance Scattering and MOKE. Saeed’s hobbies are various; among them are refereeing soccer and volleyball as well as playing them and also playing chess.

Devrani Mitra (Post-doc)

devrani.biochem@presiuniv.ac.in
Iron-sulfur clusters are among the most frequently encountered protein prosthetic groups, involved in: electron transfer, nucleotide-dependent signal transduction, biosynthetic precursors, radical catalysis and larger heterometallic active sites. In the widespread distribution of Fe-S proteins, my present work is focused on Fe protein of nitrogenase from Azotobacter vinelandii, Fer-redoxin D14C mutant from Pyrococcus furiosus, Adenine glycosylase (MutY) from E. coli, and Protochlorophy llide reductase subunits from Rhodobacter capsulatus. My major project involves normal mode characterization by 57Fe Nuclear Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopy (NRVS) after checking the samples with Mossbauer spectroscopy. The NRVS spectra are interpreted by normal mode analysis using optimized Urey-Bradley force fields as well as from DFT theory. The frequency shift after 36S substitution is used as an additional constraint in NRVS. Combining the low temperature NRVS data for the proteins in different oxidation states as well as their synthetic analogues, conventional Raman and IR analyses, and DFT approaches, we are trying to find out a common agreement for the characterization of Fe-S centers.
