Synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of furan fatty acids and thiosulfinates

Diets rich in seafood are known to have cardioprotective properties. While polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids are generally recognized as the active components of fish oil, naturally occurring furan fatty acids (FFAs) are now also believed to play a significant role. We have recently published a high-yielding synthesis of FFAs from the biomass-derived platform molecule 5-(chloromethyl)furfural (CMF), and are planning to utilize this versatile synthetic route to prepare a range of FFAs and evaluate their biological properties..  

   

Alliums have played an important dietary and medicinal role throughout the history of mankind. In some Western countries, the sale of garlic preparations ranks with those of leading prescription drugs. The beneficial properties of garlic have been attributed to allicin and related compounds. We have recently synthesized a series of dialkyl disulfides and thiosulfinates and are evaluating their effect on inflammatory disease in rodent models.
