Photocatalytic Conversion of Biomass into Gaseous Fuels

Background

In this project, we will develop a novel photochemical method for converting cellulosic biomass into gaseous fuels (hydrogen and alkanes) and other potentially useful chemicals (e.g. ketones and carboxylic acids). The process is carbon-neutral because no fossil fuels are consumed and the reaction is powered by solar energy. Several materials, including TiO2 and Cu2O will be studied as catalyst components for this process.
